Two people were hospitalized Saturday afternoon after what Phoenix police suspected was a traffic incident involving a tow truck driver and the driver of a passenger car believed to be armed with a hammer.

Sergeant Brian Bower, a department spokesman, said officers responded to calls of an aggravated assault near Interstate 17 and Greenway Road around 2:20 p.m. Bower said officers were told that a tow truck driver and the driver of a passenger car were traveling eastbound on Greenway Road when the two got into an argument that turned physical.

“At one point, the driver of the car attacked the driver of the tow truck with what is believed to be a hammer, while the driver of the tow truck attempted to hit the driver of the car with his truck,” Bower said.

Bower said the two drivers damaged several nearby vehicles that were not involved in the conflict. Both drivers were taken to a hospital as a precaution and were expected to be jailed upon release. Bower did not discuss criminal charges against the drivers.
